Ergonomics, or “human engineeringâ€, is the science of designing the job, equipment, and workplace to fit the worker. This optimum fit reduces the physical stress on the worker’s body by regularly varying the load borne by various muscle groups and by keeping the joints in proper alignment.
The benefits of sound ergonomics include improved worker productivity, fewer work-related injuries, reduced absenteeism, and better workplace morale.
A vital part of determining the optimum fit between a person and their work environment is to carefully assess the physical demands of the job, including all relevant cognitive, perceptual and environmental factors. Occupational Therapists are trained experts in this type of work.
